What Is Sandy Loam? Key Things To Know

Choosing between the many types of soil available can be tricky if you aren’t familiar with their individual characteristics. Before starting any project, knowing the properties of the soil in question is key for success. Choosing the wrong soil type can limit plant growth and be detrimental to your garden’s health.

Sandy loam is a popular choice because it offers a variety of benefits thanks to its unique composition. But what is sandy loam made of exactly, and what is it used for? Keep reading to learn the answers to these questions and more.

Is It Good For Gardening

Besides farming, sandy loam soil is considered one of the best soils for gardening. The combination of sand, silt, and clay provide the benefits of all three without letting any particular one dominate. Sandy loam is known for its ability to retain water while still allowing proper drainage.

It’s a great choice for vegetable gardens; carrots, tomatoes, onions, green beans, radishes, and peppers all thrive in sandy loam soil. You won’t have to worry about loam soil drying out in summer or not draining well during a heavy rain. These factors make it an ideal year-round choice for gardening.

Sandy Loam Soil Characteristics

In general, sandy loam soils are made from 30% silt, 10% clay, and 60% sand. The dominant sand particles are what give sandy loam its characteristic gritty texture.

If you hold a handful of sandy loam in your hand and add a bit of water, you’ll start to notice a putty-like texture that forms after being mixed with moisture. When dry, it tends to run freely through your fingers. It will usually have a reddish brown color from the combination of clay and sand.
